Preschool Learning Activity - Blindfolded Painting

Objective: to introduce sight disabilities to young children and foster sensitivity toward blindness as well as develop appreciation for the importance of eyesight.

Learning Activities

Before starting this blindfolded painting activity, talk with children about what it would be like if they couldn't see the things around them in the world. Explain about blindness in a general way, talk about how important eyesight is and introduce the concept of painting without being able to see.

Set up painting materials in your childrens' play art area. Cover the work area a floor to catch and spills. Use low containers that can't tip to hold paints and water. Have them paint a picture, then when it's finished ask them to attempt to paint again while wearing a blindfold.

Before they being the blind painting exercise, have children feel the materials and get a sense of where the paper and paints are located.

When the second painting is finished, put them together to compare then talk about the differences and also the experience of blind painting.
